IITA IPM project 06: Expansion
of the dissemination and utilization of mosaic resistant cassava in five
selected districts in Uganda
Duration: 3 years (2003 – 2005)
Purpose: To significantly strengthen the food security
in five selected districts of Uganda through the sissemination of CMD resistant
cassava and to increase the competitiveness of the sub-sector through improved
market informatyion, market linkage and the development of technologies
packages directed at commercial cassava production.
Background/description: The project consists of 5 modules which include a)
multiplication & dissemination, b) marketing, c) germplasm development, d)
pest & disease monitoring & impact and e) commercial cassava. Each
module is led by a lead scientist (four of IITA and one of NARO).
Implementation of project activities is through IITA, NARO and 5-7 selected NGO
partners in the five target districts.

Expected outputs: a) Impact study
on the expanded area under CMD resistant varieties in target districts; b)
Strengthened food security base in the target districts & increased farmer
income through linkages to higher value cassava markets; c) New varieties with
quality traits suitable to the target districts evaluated and popularized; d)
Potential for commercial cassava production in Uganda known and technology
packages for commercial production available
Potential impact and beneficiaries: 600 farmers and
300 ha involved in commercial cassava production. Approximately 2,500 farmers
& extension workers trained on improved production practices. Potential
impact: i. 9,815 farmers involved and 3,925 ha planted with improved varieties.
ii. 117,200 tons of cassava produced.
